5 Ways to Celebrate National Women’s Small Business Month Every Day

Who runs the world? Girls! This month, we proudly raise a glass to the unstoppable power that all Female Disruptors hold. One woman’s success story is a catalyst for thousands. She is a collection of risks endured, of progress, and of spaces conquered.

National Women’s Small Business Month is a time to thank the women who came before us, to inspire the generation that is bound to fill our shoes, and most importantly, to appreciate the outstanding woman that you have become. Here are several ways to support, recognize, and empower women business owners.

Female Disruptors is dedicated to women entrepreneurs in all industries who advocate for equality, freedom, and acceptance. We add to the movement by spotlighting women who are disruptors in their space, covering women’s social issues, and sharing buzzworthy content that you don’t want to miss! If you are looking to join in the disruption, feel free to nominate yourself or a friend here!

1. Share Key Facts on Social Media

The title of CEO, owning your own business, and leading a movement are all viable paths for women. Check out these facts by The 2019 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, which provides data and insight on women’s entrepreneurial ecosystem (published annually by American Express).

  • Women-owned businesses represent 42% of all businesses (nearly 13 million), employing 9.4 million workers and generating $1.9 trillion in revenue.
  • As of 2019, women of color account for 50% of all women-owned businesses. An estimated 6,417,400 women-of-color-owned businesses employ 2,389,500 people (25% of total women-owned businesses’ employment) and generate $422.5 billion in revenue (23% of total women-owned businesses’ revenue).
  • Over the past five years, the annual growth rate in the number of women-owned firms has been more than doubled that of all businesses.

Knowledge is power! These are just a few exciting facts that are a driving force in letting young girls, teenagers on the cusp of adulthood, and even corporate women know that their dreams are attainable.

2. Make It Official, Certify Your Women Owned Business

certified SBA WOSB - woman owned small business

Women-owned businesses, no matter the size, are of equal importance to that of a business owned by a man. The SBA or U.S. Small Business Administration offers a contracting program to validate female entrepreneurs’ businesses. If you’re looking to reap benefits and compete for government contracts, then see if you qualify today!

Create a profile to see if your firm meets the criteria for any of the following programs:

  • 8(a) Business Development (BD) Program: Offers up a wide spectrum of assistance to firms that are owned and controlled by at least 51% of socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.
  • Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB): To quality, your firm must be at least 51% owned and controlled by women.
  • Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone): Provides federal contract set-asides for small businesses in economically depressed communities.

Once officially certified, be sure to let government organizations know that you’re eligible for work by simply changing your profile status!
